2012 Training Camp: Returning Players Ready For New Season

March 18, 2016
The Rochester Rattlers opened their 2012 training camp in Sahlen’s Stadium on Saturday, April 14 th 2012.  While many of the players on the Rattlers roster for 2012 have indoor commitments or collegiate commitments that they need to complete before joining the team, G John Galloway, M Marty Cahill, and M Matt Striebel were all in Rochester last weekend to begin their second season with the team.

“It’s good to get out and practice with the guys for the first time this year.”  Galloway said.  It’s good to see guys like Marty (Cahill) and Matt (Striebel) back too.  Bringing some key players back for this season gives us more of a team feeling than we had last year when everything was new.”

G John Galloway was selected as the team’s 2011 Rookie of the Year after joining the Rattlers two games into the MLL season.  Galloway immediately became the Rattlers starting goalie and posted a 2-7 record the rest of the way.  He had a 13.11 goals against average and a 0.537 saves percentage .  Galloway was named the Cascade MLL Rookie of the Week after he made 19 saves and gave up a season low eight goals in a 9-8 win over the Outlaws in Denver.  With a season of experience to adjust to the increased speed of play in the MLL, he has higher expectations for himself in 2012.

“I think having a year of experience in the league will make a huge difference.”  Galloway said.  “Last spring was kind of crazy finishing up with ‘Cuse and then making my debut with the Rattlers the following weekend.  This year the team is more established than it was a year ago, and I’m more comfortable with my role in it as we start training camp.”

Veteran M Matt Striebel is back to lead the Rattlers midfield in 2012.  Striebel scored 13 goals (four two-point goals) and added eight assists for 25 points in 2011.  He finished in the top 20 in MLL in points and in the top five in two-point goals.  Striebel is one of the most experienced and celebrated players in all of Major League Lacrosse.  He has won three Stinfeld Cups with Philadelphia in 2004, 2006, and 2007, and was named the Championship Game MVP in 2007.  He has been named to seven MLL All-Star teams and two MLL All-Pro Teams.  Striebel has represented his country in three World Lacrosse Championships (2002, 2006, and 2010) and won two gold medals in 2002 and 2010.

“It’s good to see some familiar faces back in camp.”  Striebel said.  “It’s also good to see some of the new guys that we’ve picked up during the off-season.  Kevin Leveille and John Lade are going to make us a better team this year.  There’s already a great attitude in camp, and I think there’s a lot of optimism heading into this season.”

M Marty Cahill had a breakout season for the Rattlers in 2011.  Cahill was the Chicago Machine’s ninth overall selection in the 2011 MLL Draft, but he finished the 2010 season with only three goals in as many games.  Last season Cahill scored 16 goals out of midfield for Rochester.  He was named to the MLL All-Star Game for the first time in his career.  He finished in the top ten in goals scored by a middie, and he scored two hat tricks during the 2011 season.

Marty Cahill is looking to have another successful year scoring markers in 2012.

“It’s good to be back in Rochester, and I’m definitely looking forward to the season.”  Cahill said.  “We’ve got a solid core back from last season’s team, we had a great draft, and we made some trades during the offseason.  There’s a sense here that we’re better than we were last year.  There’s a lot of excitement in camp right now.”
