Rattlers Looking For Second Straight Win

March 18, 2016
The Rochester Rattlers will be looking to win their second consecutive game on Saturday, June 9 th at 7:05PM in McMaster University’s Ron Joyce Stadium against the Hamilton Nationals.  The Rochester Rattlers defeated the previously unbeaten Boston Cannons 17-16 in overtime on Friday, June 1 st.  The Rattlers had played their first three games of the season with a shortened roster due to NLL and collegiate commitments, but made a statement on national television in MLL’s first game on the CBS Sports Network.  Rochester enters the weekend tied with Long Island for fourth place in the MLL standings.

The Rattlers had their highest scoring game of the 2012 season last Friday night in their 17-16 (OT) victory against the Cannons.  Star A Ned Crotty matched Boston’s star M Paul Rabil with five points (three goals, two assists).  Crotty is the Rattlers leading scorer with seven goals and four assists for eleven points.  A Jay Card had two goals and two assists in his debut with Rochester, and he was the main beneficiary when Boston slid off him to try to stop Crotty.  Veteran M Matt Striebel scored five points (three goals, one two-point goal, one assist) in the win over Boston and has ten points on the season.  He is third in MLL in two-point markers with three.  SSDM Steve DeNapoli has used his speed and quickness to turn ground balls and caused turnovers into six transition goals.

“We thought we were going to be able to score some goals this year, but we just had to get everyone here.”  Rattlers coach Tim Soudan said.  “Crotty missed our first game with Boston because of a NLL playoff game, and last weekend was Card’s first game with us.  Kevin Leveille has been on IR the past two weeks, so we actually have one more option that we’re going to be working into the attack over the next couple of weeks.”

Coach Soudan and the Rattlers had a lot of contributions from rookies in last week’s victory over Boston.  M Roy Lang scored the game winning goal in overtime.  It was his third goal of the season to go along with eight ground balls for the two way middie out of Cornell.  M Jordan MacIntosh recorded his first MLL points with two goals and one assist, while M Kevin Drew and M Michael Lazore both scored their first MLL goals.  Defensively the Rattlers first round draft pick, D Mike Manley, limited Boston A Ryan Boyle to one shot on goal and two assists.

Rochester Rattlers G John Galloway reclaimed his position in goal during the 17-16(OT) vitory over Boston.  Galloway played his first full game of the 2012 season after sharing time with G Mike Gabel in Week One and Week Four losses.  Galloway missed the Rattlers 12-8 Week Three victory over the Bayhawks in Chesapeake, and Gabel made 27 saves on the way to being named the MLL Defensiv Player of the Week.  The Rattlers ended any potential controversy by leaving Gabel off the roster for their 17-16(OT) victory over the Cannons, and Galloway responded with 17 saves on 32 shots, including 8 stops in the fourth quarter.  Gabel was traded to Chesapeake this week so Galloway will once again be the Rattlers undisputed starter for the remained of the season.

The Hamilton Nationals are also coming off a victory last weekend.  They defeated the Charlotte Hounds 18-17 for their first win of the season on Saturday, June 2 nd.  The Nationals started the season 0-3, but were playing with a shortened roster due to commitments to the Knighthawks NLL Championship run.  Former Rochester Rattler Joe Walters had four goals and four assists while former Rattler Casey Powell chipped in three points.  Now that the Nationals have their roster in place for the 2012 season, they will also be looking to make a push up the standings over the last ten games of the season.

“Last year we started to play some good lacrosse in the second half of the season.”  Soudan said.  “We won two games in a row against Denver, and really felt like we had a chance to get on a roll.  It just ended up that we dug ourselves too deep of a hole in the standings to try to get out of.  We don’t want to let the same thing happen again this season.”
