Rattlers Pick Penn Yan Star

March 18, 2016
The Rochester Rattlers have selected Mike Manley (D) from Duke University with the third overall pick in the 2012 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Entry Draft.  The former Penn Yan superstar was the ACC Rookie of the Year as a first-year Blue Devil and a Third Team All-American as a junior.  While the selection of Manley gives his MLL rights to Rochester, he will remain an amateur and use his final year of eligibility with the Blue Devils this spring.  He will join the Rattlers after the conclusion of the 2012 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse season.

We’ve got a core group of quality defenders in Rochester right now, but Mike Manley has the ability to come in and instantly make our back line better.”  Rattlers Head Coach Tim Soudan said.  “Manley is a shut-down defender with local roots in the Rochester area.  He’s a special player who fits a need.”

During his junior year Manley was a USILA Third Team All-American.  He started nineteen games and helped lead a defense that allowed only 8.98 goals per game.  He finished the season with forty-four ground balls and caused seventeen turnovers.  Manley caused three turnovers in the NCAA Tournament against both Johns Hopkins and North Carolina.  He was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team.

In 2009 Manley played in eighteen out of nineteen possible games as a sophomore and helped anchor a defense that allowed 8.42 goals per game.  He picked up thirty-four ground balls and caused eleven turnovers.  He was an All-ACC Tournament selection.

In his first-year Manley was named the ACC Rookie of the Year.  He played in and started eighteen games as a freshman.  He secured twenty-three ground balls and was part of a defensive unit that led the ACC and finished eighth in the nation in goals allowed per game with 8.30.  He tallied his only two points of the season, one goal and one assist, in a win over Maryland.

Manley sat out the 2011 season with an injury and used a medical red shirt.  He is now healthy and ready to return to action with the Blue Devils this spring.

“We’ve actually been working hard on our back line since we brought the Rattlers back to Rochester last November.”  Rochester Rattlers Owner and General Manager Rob Clark said.  “We selected Joel White with our top pick in last year’s draft.  We traded for John Lade in the off-season, and now we have selected (Mike) Manley in the first round of this year’s draft.”

Michael Manley was a five year letter winner at Penn Yan High School under coach Brian Hobart.  As a senior he was named to the All-America team.  He led the squad to four NYSPHSAA Boy’s Lacrosse State Final Fours in his four high school years.  As a freshman he led Penn Yan to the state finals and as a sophomore, junior, and senior he led the Mustangs to the state semi-finals.  Manley was named an all-league selection as a sophomore and junior.  He was named the Defensive Player of the Year after his junior and senior season.
