Rattlers Ready for First Home Opener since 2008

March 18, 2016
Rochester hosts the Long Island Lizards Saturday May 21 st at 7PM

The Rattlers return to Rochester on Saturday May 21 st at 7PM to host the Long Island Lizards in their first Major League Lacrosse home game since 2008.  Rochester returned to MLL last Saturday night in a 14-10 away loss to the defending MLL champion Chesapeake Bayhawks.  The Lizards also enter the game with an 0-1 record after dropping their season opener 15-12 to the Boston Cannons in Harvard Stadium last Saturday night.

Last weekend Rochester was led in Chesapeake by second-year attacker Ned Crotty, who recorded a hat trick and added an assist for four points.  Last year Crotty was the top overall pick in the MLL Draft and won the 2010 Cascade MLL Rookie of the Year award.  Rookie Brian Caufield will be joining the attack this week.  Caufield was an All-American with the University of Albany, and was on the Tewaaraton watch list as one of the nation’s top players as a junior.  He led the Great Danes with 22 assists this spring.  Greg Bice, the Rattlers top defensemen, returns to the line-up after recording four shots and one goal last Saturday while scooping 4 ground balls.  Goalie Mike Gabel will be back between the pipes after posting 13 saves in last weekend’s loss.

The Long Island Lizards are returning their two top attackers from 2010 in Matt Danowski and Tim Gottelmann.  Danowski finished second in MLL in goals (25), assists (18) and points (47) a season ago while Gottelmann chipped in 21 goals. Midfielder Stephen Peyser led the Lizards last weekend when he opened the scoring with a two point goal in the first four minutes of the game to give the Lizards a 2-0 lead.  Peyser finished the game with 2 goals for 3 points.  Goalie Drew Adams posted a 7-5 record with an MLL leading 11.53 goals-against average in 2010.  He had 14 saves in a losing effort against the Cannons last week.

This Saturday will be the Rattlers first home opener since their 2008 MLL championship.  The Chicago Machine, the franchise Rochester acquired last November, played their entire home schedule on the road last year, so this will be second-year attacker Ned Crotty’s first professional home game.  “It’s going to be awesome.  It will be my first professional home game.  We were in Rochester for a game with the Machine last year and it was fun.  They have a great facility and a great fan base up there” Crotty said.  Veteran Greg Bice said “It’s going to be great.  I’ve played in Rochester before, but this will be my first game there as a Rattler.  I’m looking forward to the first home game.  Rochester has great fans and great facilities.”

The Rattlers will be raising a commemorative flag to honor the 2008 championship team. There will be $1 hot dogs and $1 draft beers.  Rattlers fans will receive a free magnet schedule at the gates when they enter the stadium.  Local band 50/50 will be performing at 5:30PM.
