Outlaws Surge Past Chicago, 18-8

Denver Uses Strong First Half to Post 2nd Straight Win Over Machine

DENVER, Colo. – Midfielder Max Seibald and attackman Brendan Mundorf each scored four goals and added an assist as the Denver Outlaws (8-4) posted their second win in the last three weeks with a convincing 18-8 Major League Lacrosse victory over the Chicago Machine (4-8) at INVESCO Field at Mile High on Saturday afternoon.

It was the Outlaws’ second straight win over the Machine. Denver edged Chicago by a 15-11 margin two weeks ago at INVESCO Field.

After the teams exchanged goals in the opening three minutes of the first quarter, the Outlaws used a seven-goal run to take a commanding 8-1 advantage with 7:44 remaining in the second quarter. Mundorf scored two goals with an assist to lead the Outlaws during the run while Seibald contributed a pair of goals.

With 6:35 remaining in the second quarter, midfielder Matt Striebel ended a 21-minute scoring drought with an unassisted goal to trim the margin to 8-2. Rookie attackman Ned Crotty followed with an unassisted goal with 3:29 left in the first half before Mundorf scored his third goal of the game off a feed from midfielder Brian Langtry to give Denver a 9-3 advantage at the intermission.

The teams traded goals three times in the third quarter before Denver used a four-goal spurt in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter, upping the Outlaws’ lead to 16-6.

Crotty and Mundorf traded goals just 24 seconds apart before Crotty tallied his third goal of the game, an unassisted marker with 5:43 remaining.

With 2:13 remaining, Westervelt tallied his second goal of the game with an unassisted marker past goalkeeper Mike Gabel.

While Seibald and Mundorf led the Outlaws with a five-point outing, Langtry, Westervelt and attackman Matt Brown each scored two goals with two assists.

Crotty led Chicago in a losing effort with three goals and an assist while Striebel and attackman Mike Leveille each scored a goal with an assist. Gabel recorded a season-high 19 saves as the Outlaws outshot Chicago by a convincing 61-43 margin.

It was the Machine’s fifth straight loss after a victory over the Outlaws on July 25.

The Outlaws will advance to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for MLL Championship Weekend on August 21 and 22. Denver, the second seed in the four-team field, will face either Long Island or Chesapake in the semi-finals.
