Chicago Machine Week 6 Preview

By: Dan Kopf

After suffering a devastating overtime loss to the Long Island Lizards last week, the Machine will head to Virginia Beach on Sunday to take on the Boston Cannons.  The Cannons are coming off a commanding victory over the Denver Outlaws, winning by five goals 17-12.  In that game, the Cannons were led by MLL Rookie of the Week, Max Quinzani.  Quinzani netted a hat trick in his MLL debut, scoring back to back goals to start off the third quarter.

This meeting will be the second of the season between these two teams.  In week 2 the Cannons squeaked out a victory over the Machine winning 17-15.  Machine defenseman D.J. Driscoll knows that the addition of Quinzani adds a different aspect to the Cannons offense.  “You know what to expect but this time they have Quinzani and [Paul] Rabil wasn’t a feeder the last time we played.  We’re going to see what our game plan is and how it has changed,” Driscoll said.

Rabil along with the league’s leading scorer, Matt Poskay, present even more problems for the Machine’s defense.  “Cannons are a tough matchup but I look forward to the Rabil matchup.  Having him on the field stretches out your D,” Driscoll said.  “They have a lot of weapons whether it’s Boyle or Rabil up top, it’s really tough.  They do a lot of damage and it’s hard to defend.”

For Driscoll the key to combating the Cannons offense starts at the Faceoff with Anthony Kelly.  “Train [Kelly] is one of the best in the league.  He gives us a lot more possessions,” Driscoll said.  “Every offense has an advantage in the league.  We have strong and shifty middies which creates good matchups for us on both sides of the field.”

The Machine will also look to capitalize on those matchups on the offensive end.  Chicago boasts the second highest scoring offense in the league despite an ever changing lineup.  The Machine continue to jumble the offensive lineup by trading attackman Chazz Woodson to the Chesapeake Bayhawks for midfielder Jordan Levine.  Levine joins recently acquired Josh Sims in the midfield along with veterans Bill McGlone and Chris Rotelli.

Despite the new faces, the offense will look to get the ball by Cannons goalie Kip Turner.  In order to do this the Machine must take better shots.  “We need to take smarter shots right off the start and take low angle shots,” Driscoll said.

The offense will run through rookie Ned Crotty, who netted his first goal of his career last week against the Lizards.  “Seeing Crotty on the field is awesome,” Driscoll said.  “He has great field vision and he’s a really promising young player.”  Crotty isn’t the only rookie who has made an immediate impact for Chicago.  Draft picks, Martin Cahill, Diogo Godoi, and Justin Pennington, all saw action last Saturday.

Godoi played very well in his debut making a positive impression on his fellow defenders.  “Diogo is a big body who communicates very well.  He also makes our D extremely balanced,” Driscoll said.

The Machine seek revenge for an early season loss to the Cannons, this Fathers Day, June 20, at 2:30 p.m.  The game can be seen on ESPN3.com.
