Week 10 News & Notes

Last week the MLL had its bye week for the 2010 FIL World Championships. Prior to the break, the Cannons hosted the MLL All-Star Game. This week’s action begins on Thursday night as the Chesapeake Bayhawks travel to Long Island to take on the Lizards. On Saturday the games continue with Toronto traveling to Boston and Chicago to Denver. Here’s all you need to know as we enter week 10.

MLL All-Star Game Recap: Team USA beat the MLL All-Stars in a nail biting, one goal victory, 13-12. During the halftime skills competition, Ned Crotty shot the most two-pointers, Paul Rabil repeated victory with a 111 mph rocket in the fastest shot competition and Kevin Buchanan nailed the freestyle contest. MLL (Not) Top 10 Plays:  The MLL All-Star game made ESPN’s Top 10 and Not Top 10 Plays. Stephen Berger’s diving goal was ESPN’s top play of the night on July 8th. To see the goal, click here. During the freestyle competition at halftime, Kevin Buchanan attempted a flying goal from behind the cage. His first attempt failed, sending Buchannan rolling down the net. His miss made the SportsCenter Not Top 10.

Poskay’s Comeback:  Just one year removed from surgery to remove testicular cancer, Matt Poskay is having his best season yet. The Cannons star has been making runs at Cannons’ records all season long. On July 10th against the Bayhawks, Poskay netted his seventh career game winning goal to break David Evans all-time Cannons record, and is now tied for seventh in the league. With 34 goals, he is six shy from breaking the single-season Cannons record for goals currently held by Michael Watson and Kevin Leveille. If Poskay is only able to make five in the next three games, he will still break David Evans all-time Cannons record for goals.  Poskay also has a shot at breaking the MLL record for man-up goals in a season.  His next man-up goal will be his 10th breaking the current record he shares with three other players.

Bayhawks Changeup:  The Chesapeake Bayhawks resume play on Thursday after replacing John Tucker as head coach. Team owner and President Brendan Kelly will take over coaching responsibilities and hired longtime Division I coach David Cottle as a consultant.

Fighting for the Playoffs:  Three teams remained tied for third with three games remaining in the season. Long Island, Chicago and Chesapeake are vying for playoff positions all with records of 4-5. Out of the three, Long Island is the top selection due to a 3-1 record in games between Chicago and Chesapeake. Chicago is the next selection based on a 1-0 head-to-head advantage over Chesapeake. It’s not over for Chesapeake, if the Bayhawks win on Thursday against Long Island and next week against Chicago, they’ll be able to taste a spot in the 2010 Championship Weekend presented by Warrior. Toronto has not yet been eliminated at 3-6.

Not Clinched Yet:  Although Boston and Denver lead the league 6-3, neither team has clinched a playoff spot. Boston is the true league leader due to a 2-0 head-to-head advantage over Denver. Both teams have a chance to clinch their playoff spot, independent of one another and regardless of other results, with wins. Boston will need to defeat Toronto, while Denver will need to win over Chicago.

Bayhawks and Their Food:  In the Bayhawks and Cannons week 9 Live Blog and Chat presented by Warrior.com, some interesting facts were found about the Bayhawks roster. Rookie Michael Kimmel pours cheddar cheese on his sick before games. Brian Vetter, his brothers and mother started a salad dressing company called Tessemae’s All Natural; it’s sold at Whole Foods in Annapolis. Alex Smith owns a Häagen-Dazs franchise in Baltimore. John Christmas was recently acquired by the Toronto Nationals, but he owns a smoothie shop in his hometown.

Countdown Is On:  Just one month remains until Major League Lacrosse’s Championship Weekend presented by Warrior.  The top four teams will be in Annapolis, Maryland on August 21 and 22.  For tickets and information visit www.majorleaguelacrosse.com
