Week 12 News & Notes

It’s the last week of the regular season for Major League Lacrosse. We have our teams for the 2010 Major League Lacrosse Championship Weekend presented by Warrior squared away and the games this weekend will cement the final two seeds. Here is all you need to know as we enter week 12.

Week 11 Award Winners:  The Offensive Player of the Week is Long Island attackman Matt Danowski for his eight points (3 goals and 5 assists) to help the Lizards to a 16-11 victory over the Toronto Nationals. Boston’s Ryan McClay earns Defensive Player of the Week for his part in holding Denver’s offense to five goals, the lowest total points for any team in a game this season. McClay’s teammate, Max Quinzani, is the Rookie of the Week for his three goals and one assist in the Cannons’ 16-5 victory over the Outlaws. Quinzani leads all rookies in goals scored with 10 goals on the season.

Denver Iced:  Boston stymied Denver’s offense, holding the Outlaws to just five goals. That’s the lowest goals scored in Major League Lacrosse and has happened only twice before.  On July 12, 2002 Rochester held Bridgeport to 5 goals and on July 14, 2007 Los Angeles held Denver to 5 goals. Boston’s defense was able to hold Denver’s attack trio of Drew Westervelt, Brendan Mundorf and Matt Brown scoreless for the first time this season.

Home Field Advantage: Following Denver’s loss at home, the Boston Cannons are now the only team to go undefeated at home. Boston’s final test will be this Saturday, August 7th as Chesapeake travels to the Bay State. If the Cannons are able to win their last regular season game, they will be undefeated at home for the first time in the franchise’s history. Only three teams in the history of the MLL have remained undefeated at home. The Los Angeles Riptide and Philadelphia Barrage were undefeated at home in 2007 and the Denver Outlaws in 2008.

Crotty on ESPN:  While the Machine didn’t have a shot at defeating the Bayhawks, Ned Crotty took his time to leap from behind the net to score one of his two goals in the outing. The rookie made number three on ESPN’s Top Plays of the weekend.

MLL History:  Tim Goettelmann is the Major League Lacrosse All-Time Goals Leader. He entered Long Island’s game against Toronto two goals behind the former record holder, Jesse Hubbard. Halfway through the fourth quarter it seemed the Monster wouldn’t set his third MLL All-Time Record, but then he nailed three in a row. Goettelmann now holds three MLL records; All-Time Games Played (121), All-Time Game-Winning Goals (13) and All-Time Goals (248).

Playoffs Set:  This weekend Chesapeake and Long Island clinched to join Denver and Boston in the 2010 MLL Championship Weekend presented by Warrior. Boston clinched the number one seed while Denver will take number two. The remaining two seeds remain open. The only way for Chesapeake to fall into the third seed would be a Bayhawks win and Lizards loss this weekend.

Bayhawks vs. Lizards:  The Bayhawks and Lizards return to the post season for the first time since 2005. The teams have competed against one another for the Steinfeld Cup on four occasions (2001-Lizards, 2002-Bayhawks, 2003-Lizards, 2005-Bayhawks). The rival teams will not play each other in the semifinals and could meet in the championship game.

Rabil Loses:  In arm wrestling. While the MLL stars were overseas playing for USA, they had time to do more than just play lacrosse. Denver’s Eric Martin wasn’t able to beat Paul Rabil or the Cannons in any of their three matchups, but the defenseman took Rabil down in arm wrestling.

Championship Weekend:  Just a reminder that Major League Lacrosse Championship Weekend presented by Warrior will be in Annapolis, MD the weekend of August 21 and 22. This year Boston, Denver, Long Island and Chesapeake will be vying for a chance to hold the Steinfeld Cup. Tickets for all three games are just $30.
