Analysis - Rattlers Supplemental Draft

The Rochester Rattlers added an impact player, addressed some positional needs, and added depth to their roster in the annual MLL Supplemental Draft yesterday.

The Rochester Rattlers selected Steven Boyle (A) with their first round selection (third overall) in yesterday’s draft.

“We had Boyle as the highest rated player in the Draft and we were thrilled when he fell to us with the third overall selection.”  Rattlers Owner and GM Rob Clark said.  “He had a great college career and we think he can be an impact player for us.”

The Rattlers added a much needed face-off specialist with their selection of Tim Fallon in the fourth round (27th overall).  They also addressed some of their defensive needs with the selection of Notre Dame standout Sam Barnes in the eighth round (59th overall) and Team USA member Ryan McClay in the tenth round (75th overall).

Rochester also added some depth in the midfield and goal.  RIT star Jordan MacIntosh and Syracuse University alum Brendan Loftus lead a class of eight midfielders who were selected by the Rattlers in yesterday’s MLL Supplemental Draft.  Former Rattlers goalie Mike Gabel was selected in the fifth round (35th overall) and former Army goalie Tom Palesky was selected in the twelfth round (83rd overall) to supply some depth behind John Galloway.

“We’re a better team right now than we were a year ago.”  Rattlers coach Tim Soudan said after yesterday’s draft.

Steven Boyle

The Rochester Rattlers selected Steven Boyle (A) with the number three overall pick in the Major League Lacrosse Supplemental Draft.

Boyle was a standout with Johns Hopkins in attack for four years.  He was a three-time All-American and scored twenty plus goals three of his four seasons with the team.  He scored ninety-five goals and added sixty-nine assists for one hundred sixty-four points in his four years career.  His senior season was his best all-round statistical season when he had thirty-two goals and twenty three assists for fifty-five points.  Boyle played two games for the Boston Cannons in 2010.

Jordan MacIntosh

In the second round the Rattlers selected Jordan MacIntosh (M) with the fifteenth overall selection.  MacIntosh played collegiately at local Division III powerhouse RIT.  In his two years with the Tigers MacIntosh scored seventy-nine goals with forty-nine assists for one hundred twenty-eight points.  He was a two-time USILA Division III All-American He scored thirty-five or more goals in both the 2010 and 2011 season.

“We believe that Jordan MacIntosh can be an impact player in MLL because of his tremendous athletic ability and his ability to play at both ends.”  Rattlers Coach Tim Soudan said.

MacIntosh played his first two years of college lacrosse at Gordon College.  He scored forty-seven goals and added twenty-five assists in twenty-four career games.  He was second on the team in scoring both years.

Tim Fallon

The Rattlers selected Tim Fallon (M) in the fourth round (twenty-seventh overall) of the MLL Supplemental Draft.  Fallon was a two-time All-American as a face-off specialist.  He pulled sixty-two percent of his face-offs at the “X” in his last two seasons on campus.  He was also a very good defensive midfielder collecting 131 ground balls as a junior and 166 ground balls as a senior.

Mike Gabel

The Rattlers brought back goalie Mike Gabel in the fifth round of the MLL Supplemental Draft.  Gabel  played for five years with the Chicago Machine in Major League Lacrosse from 2006 to 2010.  He has an 11-34 record with a 15.42 goals-against average.  He has made 756 saves over the course of his career.  Gabel played the first two games of the 2011 season with the Rattlers.  He posted an 0-2 record with thirty-one saves and a 13.00 goals-against average.  He was replaced by rookie John Galloway (Syracuse) in the third game of the 2011 season.

Other Notables – Sam Barnes and Ryan McClay

The Rattlers selected Sam Barnes (D), a close defender from Notre Dame, and Ryan McClay (D).  Barnes was a two-time All-American with the Fighting Irish his last two years on campus.  Barnes anchored a defense with a 6.19 goals-against average – the best mark in the nation – as a junior.  As a senior he started all fourteen games and anchored a defense that only gave up 6.60 goals a game.  Ryan McClay was a member of the gold medal winning Team USA in the 2010 World Lacrosse Championships.  He was also named to the All-World Team after the tournament.
