ROCHESTER, NY (June 18, 2014) This time of year during the MLL season most teams are just settling in on final roster decisions, where they rank in the league standings and how they will move forward with the remaining collegiate players who join their team. The Rochester Rattlers are definitely in the midst of figuring out those answers, just now getting comfortable with the infusion of major talent from the Division I ranks.
The 2014 Collegiate Draft was one of enviable accomplishment for the Rattlers and Coach Tim Soudan. Being able to take arguably the most explosive player in college lacrosse, Jordan Wolf of Duke, with the second overall pick was just the beginning of a storied day for the franchise. Rochester then went on to pick up Miles Thompson, the phenom from University of Albany and co-recipient of the Tewaaraton Award for Most Outstanding Player of the Year (with his brother Lyle).
All in all, the Rattlers picked up some of the very best talent from the 2014 NCAA season, taking Mark Cockerton of Virginia, Miles’ cousin Ty Thompson also of Albany, and even grabbing one of the best defensemen in the NCAA, John Locascio of Villanova. Among other players drafted, a total of 4 standouts in Rochester’s draft were nominated as the best lacrosse player in college (Tewaaraton Award).
The plan was to fit the young players into the lineup with great veteran leadership, and the rookies have molded into the fold quite well. Although Rochester is coming off a surprising and disappointing loss to the Ohio Machine 18-13 last Saturday night, they did have some bright spots in an otherwise forgetful outing. Rookie Miles Thompson recorded a hat trick, and Jordan Wolf scored 4 goals and added a helper to begin his professional career in his Rattlers debut performance.
Rochester sits tied in second place with their upcoming rival Florida Launch and play in Boca Raton tonight at FAU Stadium, airing on CBS Sports Network at 7:30 pm. If the Rattlers repeat their early season performance against the Launch (an 18-11 victory on June 1st), they will take sole possession of second place in the standings and put themselves in a great position as the season progresses. Both teams sit 4-3 and are poised to put on a great show this evening in the sunshine state.
The Rattlers have the fire power to continue to succeed, and with Team USA and Co-Captain John Galloway between the pipes the second half of the season looks very promising.
