Turri quietly makes major contributions to Rattlers success

ROCHESTER, NY  (July 14, 2014)  It’s pretty hard to be a per game, multi point contributor and go somewhat unnoticed on a red hot offensive juggernaut like the 2014 Rochester Rattlers.  But that is what has happened to midfielder Justin Turri this season, and it may be a blessing in disguise for the big Duke Blue Devils alumnus and his first place team.

Turri, a hulking 6’ 3” 215 pounder from West Islip, NY could be easily mistaken for a defensive lineman on a football field rather than a powerhouse middie in lacrosse.  Luckily for Rattlers fans and teammates he chose the stick instead of the pigskin, and he’s made a huge difference in the success of his team.  He has at least a point in every game this season, and in all but 2 has had multi goal/point showings.  When asked about Turri’s contributions Coach Tim Soudan said “Justin is a huge part of our offense.  He is a guy that has a very high IQ when it comes to the game and he is a threat to score from the outside.  He can beat you with his feet too, and demands attention from the defense or he will hurt you.”

Sometimes when you have so much firepower in a line up, it’s easy to have some guys go unheralded.  First round draft pick Jordan Wolf has lit the league on fire, and has only played a handful of games.  Miles Thompson won the Tewaaraton Award and was lacrosse’s story of the year (along with brother Lyle and cousin Ty).  Kevin Leveille became the all-time goals king, and John Galloway has been an All World backstop between the pipes.

It’s hard to imagine that there could be a player that is a major contributor in every game, and is yet overlooked by the media and others.  That seems to be the case for Turri.  Maybe the one place he’s not forgotten about is in the locker room.  “It is funny how understated his season has been from a media standpoint but he is not flying under the radar of other coaching staffs that need to prepare for him” Soudan stated.   “He is a great leader in the huddles and is able to make adjustments to the offense on the field.  He is quietly becoming one of the best assets on our team.”  Soudan jokingly quipped “he is a tremendous locker room guy, he DJs every weekend for the boys!”

When your team isn’t given much confidence from sports pundits at the beginning of a season, and you overachieve, usually there are only a couple superstars to pin those accomplishments on.  In the case of the Rochester Rattlers there isn’t one superstar holding the light, there is a large group of stars waiting to be the next one to help quiet the critics.  Justin Turri is one of those stars.  A very important, meaningful and bright one!

Turri on the team environment of the Rattlers:

"Everyone, from the coaches down to the players, really enjoys being around one another.  We have great chemistry on and off the field, and I think it really shows in the unselfishness with which we play, the fun that we have on the field, and how close we are as a team.  I have been around a few teams in this league, and I haven't seen anything comparable to what we have now."

Turri on his role and success of the team:

"I just try to play within my role on the offense.  We have so many tremendously talented players on our team, some of the best in the world at what they do.  I think the beauty of our offense is that on any given night, any player can light up the scoreboard"

The Rochester Rattlers visit Annapolis, Maryland to take on the Chesapeake Bayhawks (3-7) this coming Thursday night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium a 7 pm.  Rochester then returns home on Saturday, July 26thto take on the Charlotte Hounds at Sahlen’s Stadium also with a 7 pm start time.
