BAYHAWKS EDGE RATTLERS 13-11

The Tim Soudan era began for the Rochester Rattlers at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday night with a 13-11 loss to the Chesapeake Bayhawks.  Goalie Brian Phipps anchored the defensive end for Chesapeake with 21 saves while Dan Hardy (3 goals), Ben Rubeor (2 goals, 2 assists) and Danny Glading (1 goal, 2 assists) led the Bayhawks attack.  Rattlers rookies Jovan Miller and Jordan McBride both scored hat tricks for Rochester and leading scorer Ned Crotty chipped in with two assists.

Matt Abbott opened the scoring for the Chesapeake Bayhawks 3:23 into the game off of an assist from Steven Brooks.  Rochester’s Jeff Colburn dodged in from the endline to score unassisted less than two minutes later to level the score at one before Dan Hardy gave the lead back to the Bayhawks with a sizzling shot from just inside the two-point arc to make it 2-1 Chesapeake.  Hardy’s goal started a four-point run for the Bayhawks as Ben Hunt scored unassisted and Steven Brooks scored a two-point goal off an assist from Danny Glading The Rattlers closed out Chesapeake’s four-point run with a transition goal that Ned Crotty started in the offensive half by forcing a Chesapeake turnover, and rookie Jordan McBride finished off with his eighth goal of the season. Rochester took control of the ball with less than twenty-seconds left in the quarter, and rookie Jovan Miller finished off the scoring in the first quarter with a goal as time was expiring.  Chesapeake led 5-3 after the first quarter.  Bayhawks goalie Brian Phipps finished the quarter with six saves.

Chesapeake opened the second quarter with a goal from Danny Glading after he created the chance with a spin move on Rattlers rookie defender Tom Guadagnolo and multiple stick fakes to beat rookie goalie John Galloway.   Glading found Steven Brooks in a seam a minute later.  Ben Rubeor got free for the Bayhawks less than a minute later to give Chesapeake an 8-3 lead.  Jordan LeVine stopped the Bayhawks run when he broke down his man and scored for the Rattlers 4:08 into the second quarter.  The Rattlers cut Chesapeake’s lead to 8-5 after Rochester’s Jovan Miller set a pick for Matt Striebel giving him the time to find Brett Garber for his first goal of the game with 9:09 left in the first half.  The Rattlers defense turned in their best performance of the 2011 season as they held Chesapeake scoreless for 11:35 seconds in the second quarter.  Rattlers rookie goalie John Galloway made his best save of the season to deny Justin Smith with just over four minutes to go in the first half.  Ben Rubeor completed the first half scoring with his second goal of the game with four seconds left to give the Bayhawks a 9-5 lead at the half.

Rochester opened the scoring in the second half when Ned Crotty ran down the endline and picked out Jordan McBride for his second goal of the game.  Dan Hardy responded immediately for Chesapeake as he dodged multiple defenders and finished a left-handed shot from about eight yards out to give the Bayhawks a 10-6 lead just over three minutes into the second half.  Rattlers rookies John Galloway and Joel White teamed up to cut the Bayhawks lead to three 5:20 into the second half.  Galloway made his second point blank save of the game in the defensive end and Joel White transitioned all the way down the field to score his second goal of the season and cut the Bayhawks lead to 10-7.  The Bayhawks converted on a power play with 6:06 left in the third quarter when Ben Rubeor found Brian Carroll for the goal.  Bayhawks middie Dan Hardy scored his third goal of the night less than a minute later as his behind the back fake created enough space for him to score and give Chesapeake a 12-7 lead.  Rochester’s Brett Garber finished a power play goal with 0:57 left in the third quarter off an assist from veteran Matt Striebel to cut the Bayhawks lead to 12-8 at the end of the third quarter.

Bayhawks midfielder Justin Smith gave Chesapeake a five-goal lead again with a corner shot 3:15 into the fourth quarter.  Rattlers rookie Jovan Miller started Rochester’s best passing sequence of the game when his dodging ultimately created a chance that Jordan McBride finished off an assist from Greg Niewieroski to make it 13-9 with 10:28 left in the game.  Rattlers rookie Jovan Miller scored his second goal of the game with 7:03 left in the game to cut the Bayhawks lead to 13-10.  Miller scored his third goal of the game on a dodge with speed and explosion with 1:58 left in the game to cut the lead to 13-11 Chesapeake.  Bayhawks goalie Brian Phipps had six saves in the fourth quarter to preserve the two pint victory for Chesapeake.

The Rattlers fall to 0-7 on the season and are off next weekend for the All-Star break.  This week five Rattlers were named to the MLL All-Star Game. Ned Crotty, Martin Cahill, Matt Striebel, Jordan Levine, and Greg Bicewill represent Rochester in Boston on Saturday July 9th.
