2011 LACROSSE.COM ALL-MLL TEAM ANNOUNCED

BOSTON, Mass.– Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced Friday the players who have been named to the 2011 Lacrosse.com All-Major League Lacrosse Team, recognizing the best players at each position.  Named to the All-MLL team were:

Attack: Ned Crotty (Rochester), Brendan Mundorf (Denver), Matt Danowski (Long Island)

Midfield: Paul Rabil (Boston), Stephen Peyser (Long Island), Joe Walters (Hamilton)

Defense: Brodie Merrill (Hamilton), Kyle Sweeney (Boston), Michael Evans (Chesapeake), Mitch Belisle (Boston)

Goalkeeper: Drew Adams (Long Island)

Face-off Specialist: Chris Eck (Boston)

The selections were based on votes submitted by the general managers and head coaches of the six MLL teams in addition to voting by MLL fans.

Named to the All-MLL Team for the first time in his career, Crotty was the Rattlers’ leading scorer with 29 goals and a league-high 21 assists this year. He recorded at least two points in all 12 games this year and scored a goal in 11 of 12 outings. Crotty scored five goals with two assists against Hamilton on June 10 and contributed four goals with two assists in a 15-9 victory over Denver on July 23.

In two MLL seasons, the former Duke University attackman has scored 40 goals with 34 assists.

Selected to the All-MLL Team for the second time in three  years, Mundorf was the third-leading scorer in the MLL with 45 points this season while leading the Outlaws to their sixth straight appearance in the MLL Championship Weekend. The former UMBC standout finished the season tied with Boston Cannons attackman Matt Poskay for the league lead with 30 goals. Mundorf recorded at least six points in a game four times this season, including a 10-point performance against Hamilton in the season opener on May 14.

Since joining the MLL in 2006, Mundorf has scored a league-high 174 goals and has posted 247 points, which is tied with Long Island Lizards attackman John Grant, Jr. for the most in the MLL over the last six years.

Named to the All-MLL Team for the second straight season, Danowski was the fourth-leading scorer in the MLL with 41 points and led the league with seven two-point goals. He recorded his second straight 20-goal season this year while leading the Lizards with 23 goals. Danowski scored a goal in all 12 games, including four three-goal performances. He had a season-high five points against Rochester on May 21 and against the Rattlers on July 28.

Danowski, who finished his fourth MLL season this year, has scored 83 career goals, including 15 two-point goals, with 57 assists.  

Honored as the Warrior Offensive Player of the Year and the Bud Light MLL Season MVP for the second time in three years, Rabil earned his third straight All-MLL selection after leading the Cannons to a 9-3 record and their second straight regular season title. The Cannons’ leading scorer with 49 points, Rabil scored 28 goals, including four two-point goals, with 17 assists. The former Johns Hopkins University midfielder scored at least one goal in all 11 games, including a season-high five goals against Chesapeake on June 4. He also scored three goals, including a two-point goal, with three assists at Denver on July 3.

Rabil, who completed his fourth MLL season this year, has scored 106 career goals, including 21 two-point goals, with 46 assists.

The 2011 Sports Authority MLL Most Improved Player of the Year, Peyser earned his first All-MLL Team selection after finishing the season tied for eighth in the MLL with 32 points. The second-leading scorer for the Lizards, Peyser scored a career-high 22 goals, including six two-point goals, with four assists. Prior to this season, the former Johns Hopkins University midfielder had not scored a two-point goal in his MLL career. He posted four “hat tricks” and tallied a point in 11 of 12 games. On July 28, he tied an MLL record by scoring three two-point goals as the Lizards defeated the Rattlers at Shuart Stadium.

A fourth-year veteran, Peyser has scored 72 goals, including six two-point markers, in his career with 11 assists.

Named to the All-MLL Team for the third time in four years, Walters ranked fifth in the MLL this season with 39 points. The Nationals’ leading scorer, Walters scored 18 goals, including a two-point goal, with a career-high 20 assists. The former University of Maryland standout recorded a career-high eight points in the Nationals’ June 25 victory over Rochester, scoring two goals with six assists. He also scored three goals, including a two-point marker, with three assists against the Rattlers on June 24.

In his fifth MLL season, Walters has scored 114 career goals with 69 assists. He also has six two-point goals in his career.

Named as the Warrior Defensive Player of the Year for the sixth straight season, Merrill earned his sixth All-MLL Team selection after leading the league with 77 ground balls. In addition, he led all MLL defenders with four goals, including a two-point marker, with 12 assists. He had a season-high 13 ground balls against Boston on July 23 and also tallied 10 ground balls on July 1 in a win over Long Island. Against the Chesapeake Bayhawks on July 30, he earned a season-high three assists.

Merrill, who completed his seventh season in the MLL, has scored 35 goals, including a pair of two-point markers, with 60 assists in his career. He also ranks second in MLL history with 524 career ground balls.

Sweeney earned All-MLL Team notice for the fourth time in the last five years after playing a key role in the Cannons’ success this season. He played in nine games and scored two goals with two assists. In addition, Sweeney contributed 21 ground balls, including a season-high seven ground balls against Chesapeake on June 4. The former Georgetown University defender also had a goal with an assist in a June 25 win over the Bayhawks at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

In nine MLL seasons, Sweeney has played in 94 career games and has 30 goals with 18 assists while contributing 331 ground balls.

A two-time All-MLL Team selection, Evans played in 10 games this year for the defending MLL champion Bayhawks and had five ground balls. The former Johns Hopkins University defender had a season-high four ground balls against Long Island on June 16.

Evans, who has played three MLL seasons, has appeared in 30 career games and has 12 career ground balls.

Named to the All-MLL Team for the first time in his career, Belisle played in 10 games for the Cannons and recorded 18 ground balls. He tallied a season-high five ground balls in a win over Denver on August 6 and also contributed four ground balls at Long Island on July 16.

A fifth-year MLL veteran, the former Cornell University standout has played in 54 career games and has 74 career ground balls.

Honored as the 2011 Warrior Goalkeeper of the Year, Adams earned his second straight All-MLL Team selection after leading the MLL in minutes played (704:44). The former Penn State University netminder ranked fourth in the league with an 11.75 goals against average while his .561 save percentage ranked third in the MLL. A two-time selection as the MLL Defensive Player of the Week, Adams made a career-high 24 saves in the Lizards’ win over Boston on July 16.  

In his third MLL season, Adams has posted an 11.60 goals against average in his career while stopping 54.3 per cent of the shots he has faced. He has started each of the last 24 regular season games for the Lizards.

A first-time All-MLL Team selection, Eck led the MLL with a .595 face-off win percentage while ranking second in the MLL with 156 face-off wins. He posted the fifth-highest single-season face-off win percentage while helping the Boston Cannons to their third MLL regular season title. With 51 ground balls, Eck was tied for fifth in the MLL and had a season-high 13 ground balls in the regular season finale against Rochester.

In his fourth MLL season, Eck has won 553 of 990 face-offs (.559) in his career and has tallied 186 ground balls with six goals and four assists.

The 2011 Sports Authority MLL Championship Weekend presented by Warrior will take place this weekend at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md. The top-seeded Cannons will face the defending MLL champion Bayhawks in the first semi-final on Saturday at 12 p.m. while the Hamilton Nationals play against the Denver Outlaws in the second semi-final at 3 p.m.

The semi-final winners will meet on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. in the MLL Championship Game. All three games will be televised on ESPN2 and broadcast on the Internet at ESPN3.com.
