College Round-Up


The #2/#3 ranked Duke University Blue Devils lost to ninth ranked Notre Dame 7-3 in one of the premier match-ups of last weekend.  Blue Devils senior D Mike Manley anchored a defense that shutout the Fighting Irish attack in the first quarter to give Duke a 2-0 lead.  However, four Fighting Irish goals in a 1:42 span in the second quarter gave Notre Dame a 4-2 lead and the Irish never looked back.  Manley finished the game with one ground ball and one caused turnover.  Duke is now 1-1 on the season.  Duke returns to action against Penn on February 24th

The #7/#8 ranked Syracuse Orange opened their 2012 campaign with a convincing 12-7 victory over the University of Albany.  The Orange fell behind 2-0 to the Great Danes, before Syracuse ran off ten consecutive goals to take control of the game.  Syracuse outscored Albany 6-0 in the second quarter to take an 8-2 lead into half time.  All eight first half goals were scored by Syracuse middies - JoJo Marasco scored three goals, Ryan Barber scored two goals, and Hakeem Lecky, Luke Cometti, and Scott Loy all added one marker each.  Syracuse returns to action against Army on February 26th at 2PM in the Carrier Dome.

#3/#4 ranked Cornell opens their season on February 25th at Hobart College, but the Big Red got some good news last weekend.  They found out that senior A Rob Pannell and senior M Roy Lang have been named to the 2012 Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List.  Joining Pannell and Lang on the watch list are Hobart’s FO Bobby Dattilo, Army D Tim Henderson, and Hartford A Carter Bender.

#7/#8 Maryland won its nineteenth consecutive season opener 12-6 over Hartford.  Senior All-American Joe Cummings scored his first goal of the 2012 campaign to put the Terps up 6-5 with 4:09 left in the third quarter.  Maryland led the rest of the way and finished on a 6-1 run after the Cummings goal.  Cummings finished the game with one goal and one assist.  Hartford’s A Carter Bender had one assist.  Maryland moves to 83-3-1 all-time to start their season, and will be back in action at Georgetown on February 24th.  Bender’s Hartford Hawks will play Holy Cross on February 25th.

Hobart opened their season against the Siena Saints.  Siena went on a six goal run to take a 13-7 lead over the Statesmen, and then held on to win 13-11.  Hobart’s FO Bobby Datillo went 21 for 28from the ‘X’ and scooped seven ground balls in the defeat.  Hobart will try for their first win of the season on February 25th against #3/#4 Cornell.

Army improved their record to 2-1 with a 14-8 victory over VMI.  The Black Knights took the lead from the opening face-off, and they ran out to a 6-2 lead after the first quarter and an 8-4 lead at the half.  Senior tri-captain Tim Henderson scooped a season-high seven ground balls.  He also recorded his second assist of the season.  Army will visit the Dome to take on the Syracuse Orange on February 26th at 2PM.
