College Round-Up: Week Three


No, 1 Virginia – 14  ( 4 – 0 )

No. 4 Syracuse – 10  ( 2 – 1 )

The Syracuse University Orange Men’s Lacrosse Team lost their first game of the 2012 campaign to the nation’s number one ranked team in Virginia.  The Orange ran out to a 6 – 4 lead at the half, but they could not overcome Virginia’s ten goal second half in a game shown nationally on ESPN.

Caviler’s middies Colin Briggs (3G – 1A), Rob Emery (2G) and Matt White (2G) combined for seven goals and one assist to lead the way for Virginia.

Orange sophomore A Derek Maltz kept the Orange within striking distance with his career high five points all coming in the second half after redshirt senior A Tim Desko’s hat trick paced Syracuse to their two goal half time lead.  Orange G Matthew Lerman finished with a career high nine saves.  He made four saves in the first quarter to keep Syracuse in the game early.

M Kevin Drew made his first appearance of 2012 for the Orange and he scooped two ground balls.

 

No. 2 Duke – 7  ( 3 – 2 )

No. 5 Maryland – 10  ( 3 – 0 )

Maryland scored four goals on their firstseven shots of the game and jumped out to a 4-0 lead over Duke in the first eight minutes and never looked back as they won their top five showdown with the Blue Devils in Maryland.

Drew Snider powered the Terps attack with a hat trick while Billy Gribbin had a goal and two assists for Maryland.

Duke trailed 7-2 at the half, but they were able to cut into the five goal deficit with an improved defensive effort and five second half goals.  D Mike Manley anchored a Blue Devils defense that limited Maryland to six second half shots.  John Dionne led Duke’s attack with a hat trick while Justin Turri added two goals and Robert Rotanz added two assists.  Manley finished with three caused turnovers and two ground balls.

 

No. 3 Cornell – 18  ( 2 – 0 )

Army – 7  ( 2 – 3 )

Steve Meek scored five second quarter goals to get Cornell out to a 6-2 lead over Army in the first half.  Cornell’s superstar Rob Pannell scored one goal and added five assists while freshmen Matt Donovan posted a career high six points (4G - 2A). 

M Roy Lang scored one goal for the Big Red.

Garrett Thull led the Army attack with three goals while LSM Tim Henderson chipped in three caused turnovers and two ground balls in the loss.

 

Hobart – 15

Binghamton – 10

Sophomore G Peter Zunino made sixteen saves in the contest and stopped seven out of eight shots in the third quarter as the Statesmen turned a three goal half time lead into a six goal lead heading into the fourth quarter.  Sophomore A Alex Lee scored five goals while senior A Sam Miller scored three goals and added one assist for Hobart.

Hobart’s FO Bobby Dattilo went 20 for 26 from the ‘X’ and also collected a game high thirteen ground balls.

Michael Antinozzi led the way for Binghamton with three goals, one assist, a team high four ground balls and a game high three caused turnovers.  Tyler Perrelle added two goals and two assists for the Bearcats.

The win over Binghamton was Hobart’s first of the season.

 

Hartford – 10

No. 12 Denver – 11

Hartford rallied from six goals down to cut the lead to one late, but could never find the equalizer as they fell by one at No. 12 Denver . 

Hartford A Carter Bender scored his fourth goal of the campaign in the defeat.

 

Lehigh – 9 ( 4 – 1 )

No. 4 North Carolina – 8 ( 4 – 1 )

In perhaps the biggest upset of the weekend unranked Lehigh upset the Tar Heels at Chapel Hill.  Lehigh outscored UNC 5 – 0 over a twenty-five minute period from the second quarter through the fourth quarter.

A Thomas Wood notched two assists and D Charlie McComas scooped one ground ball for Carolina in the loss.
