The Rochester Rattlers defeated the Boston Cannons 17-16 in overtime on Friday, June 1st in Sahlen's Stadium. Rattlers rookie M Roy Lang (Cornell) scored the game winning goal for Rochester. Rattlers superstar A Ned Crotty led the team in scoring with three goals and two assists. Boston entered the game with a nine game winning streak dating back to last season when they won the 2011 MLL Championship.
The first quarter started off with back and forth play between the Rattlers and it ending with the Cannons in the lead 4-2. The Cannons started the quarter with two goals in the first seven minutes, Brad Ross scored at 3:35 and Mike Stone scored at 6:49. The Rattler’s Jay Card came back with a goal at 8:42 , but two more goals by the Cannons followed. Crotty ended the first quarter with an unassisted goal for the Rattlers.
In the second quarter every goal made by the Cannons was matched by the Rattlers, and the Cannons led 9-7 at the half. The first three goals scored by the Cannons in the second quarter were by Kevin Buchanan . Ryan Boyle assisted the last goal Buchanan made at 11:43, which would put Boyle in the lead for most assists in MLL history with 212. The previous record holder was Connor Gill. Rochester goals in the quarter were scored by Jay Card, Ned Crotty, Kevin Drew and Steve DeNapoli had two goals.
The Rattlers had a great start in the third quarter scoring four goals in the first eight minutes. They continued with this pattern all throughout the quarter with Ned Crotty coming through with a goal in the last 30 seconds. The Cannons came away with two more goals in this quarter, but the quarter would end with Rochester on top 14-11. Goals were scored by Rattlers Jordan MacInstosh, Craig Bunker, Ned Crotty, and two goals by Matt Striebel - one being a two-pointer.
The Cannons would step up their game in the fourth quarter with five goals, while the Rattlers scored twice. The game tied up at 16-16 towards the end of the quarter leaving the last three minutes crucial for the outcome of the game. Paul Rabil scored two goals, while Bill McGlone, Chris Eck, and Mike Stone would all contribute one goal for the Cannons. The Rattlers two goals were scored by Jordan MacIntosh and Matt Striebel. The fourth quarter would end 16-16 leading the game into sudden victory overtime.
Roy Lang's goal led the Rattlers to their second victory leaving them at 2-2 for the season. The Boston Cannons suffered their first defeat of the season and now have a 4-1 record. When the Rattlers had previously played the Cannons on April 28th, they had a loss of 15-3.
