Rattlers Looking For Repeat In Denver

The Rochester Rattlers face MLL second place Denver Outlaws on Sunday June 16th in Sports Authority Field at Mile High on Saturday, June 16th at 7:30 PM local time. The Rattlers are coming off a loss to the Hamilton Nationals 17-8 on Saturday, June 9th in Ron Joyce Stadium.  Hamilton’s win leaves the Nationals and Rattlers tied for fifth place in MLL standings with records of 2-3.

Rattler midfielders Steve DeNapoli and Matt Striebel, and defender Joel White were all voted into the 2012 All-Star game this past Wednesday.  DeNapoli and White will be playing in their first All-Star game on the Young Guns, while Striebel will be participating in his fifth on team Old School. Striebel and DeNapoli each have six goals on the season.  MLL allowed fans to vote for the players for the first time, which accounted for one third of the overall voting process.

Outlaw attackman Brendan Mundorf, midfielders Peet Poillon and Jeremy Sieverts, defenseman Lee Zink, and goalie Jesse Schwartzman were named to the 2012 MLL All Star game.  Sieverts, who has been selected to play in his first All-Star game, has exploded onto the MLL scene with 13 goals, three assists, and five two-point goals.  Sievert’s 21 points and five two-point goals rank fifth in the league.  Brendan Mundorf has 21 points on the season with 11 goals and 11 assists. Mundorf tied for the league lead with 30 goals in 2011, and was named Offensive Player of the Week three times, the most of any player.

Midfielder Brad Ross will be suiting up for the first time as a Rattler against Denver after being traded from Boston for Martin Cahill on June 12th. In 2011, he appeared in all twelve games again, tallied nineteen goals and six assists while collecting 5 ground balls. Ross scored two goals in the playoffs, and helped the Cannons to the franchise’s first ever Steinfeld Cup. In 2010 Ross recorded 21 points in all twelve games.

The Rattlers added six players in the MLL Waiver Draft comprised of NCAA seniors this past week.

The Rattlers made a post draft trade on June 7th with the Chesapeake Bayhawks that sent backup goaltender Mike Gabel to the Bayhawks. The trade was in exchange for goalie Rob Fortunato, who was selected by Chesapeake in the MLL waiver draft.  The Rattlers also drafted another goalie, Ryan Wickham who played for the United States Naval Academy but was originally a high school teammate with Rattler Michael Manley in Penn Yan, where he was also named an All-American.

The Rattlers also drafted Midfielder Keith Long from VMI.  Long was ranked No. 28 in NCAA in points per game with 3.08 per contest (40 points in 13 contests).  He had four assists against Mercer in 2011 which tied him for third in the single game record book and was also tied for team lead with goals (5) and leads team in assists (6) for a team high 11 points.

Jacob Ziegler and Andrew Palmer from nearby Webster were also drafted by the Rattlers.  Ziegler was a defensive player at Jacksonville University and Palmer, also a defender, competed at the United States Naval Academy.

Last year, the Rattlers swept the Outlaws 2-0 behind 2011 All-Star Ned Crotty six goals and four assists.  Outlaw goalie Jesse Schwartzman has continued to display his dominance from the 2011 season in 2012.  This season Schwartzman has 10.5goals against average, 72 saves and .541 save percentage.  Schwartzman will look to repeat as Goalie Gauntlet champion at the 2012 All-Star game.

The Rattlers game in Denver against the Outlaws can be seen live on CBS Sports Network at 7:30PM local time, 9:30PM in the east.
