Rattlers Lose In Denver

The Denver Outlaws defeated the Rochester Rattlers 16-12 on Saturday, June 16th in INVESCO Field at Mile High.  Outlaws star A Brendan Mundorf had an eight point night with six goals and two assists.  Rattlers new acquisition M Brad Ross had a hat trick with a two-point goal for four points while A Kevin Leveille had two goals and one assist for Rochester in the loss.  Rochester is now two games out of the fourth and final playoff spot in Major League Lacrosse with eight games remaining in the 2012 regular season.

Mundorf did not waste any time in getting his team off to a fast start.  Mundorf scored the opening goal of the game 1:43 into the first quarter.  Then, after Outlaws FO Chris Mattes won the battle at the X with Rochester’s FO Tim Fallon, Mundorf assisted on D Matt Bocklet’s marker to give Denver a 2-0 lead with 13:03 left in the first quarter.

The Rochester Rattlers would score the game’s next goal.  SSDM Steve DeNapoli was flagged for an illegal body check with 7:40 left in the first quarter.  Halfway through DeNapoli’s one minute penalty, D Tom Montelli broke out in transition and scored the Rattlers first shorthanded goal of the season to cut the Outlaws lead to 2-1.  Just over a minute later Rattlers D Joel White dove from the back of the goal and wrapped his shot around the post to tie the score at 2-2.

Former Rattlers M Justin Pennington scored the final goal of the first quarter with 2:46 left to give Denver a 3-2 lead at the first intermission.  Although Denver led by one goal the Rattlers were outshooting the Outlaws 9-7 after the first 15 minutes.  White led the way for Rochester with one goal and two ground balls, while Mundorf had one goal and one assist for Denver.

The second quarter opened with five goals in the first four minutes. Ross, acquired for M Marty Cahill in a mid-week deal with the Boston Cannons, tied the game at 3-3 for the Rattlers less than a minute into the second quarter.  Outlaws M Casey Cittadino responded for Denver just about one minute later to give them a 4-3 lead.  Mundorf scored his second goal of the game to open up a 5-3 lead with 12:26 to play in the first half.  Rattlers A Jay Card cut the lead to one with a goal one minute later, but former Rochester A Jordan McBride scored a marker off of an assist from M Peet Poillon to give the Outlaws a 6-4 lead with 11:02 left in the second quarter.

McBride would score the next goal of the game off of an assist from Poillon with 5:11 left in the first half to give Denver their biggest lead of the game, but the Rattlers would respond late in the first half.  Rochester’s Leveille took a pass from White and ripped a very fast shot past Outlaws G Jesse Schwartzman, and then Ross scored his second goal of the game to cut the Outlaws lead to 7-6 with 1:01 left in the second quarter.  However, for the second time in the game Mattes won a faceoff from Fallon for Denver and three seconds later Mundorf completed his hat trick to give the Outlaws an 8-6 lead.  Denver M Drew Snider scored the last goal of the first half with eight seconds remaining to give the Outlaws a 9-6 lead over the Rattlers at the half time intermission.

McBride and Mundorf scored two goals each in the second quarter for Denver while Poillon assisted on both of McBride’s markers.  Ross led the Rattlers with two goals of his own in the second quarter.

The Outlaws scooped 16 ground balls to the Rattlers 11 in the first half while Mattes outdueled Fallon 10-7 to give Denver eight extra possessions.  The Outlaws outshot the Rattlers 9-5 in the second quarter on their way to a three goal halftime lead.

The Rattlers man down unit was efficient in the first half killing off all three Denver power plays and scoring a shorthanded goal.

The Denver Outlaws went on a decisive 6-2 run in the third quarter to put the game out of reach for the Rattlers.  Mundorf scored three goals in the third quarter to give him a double hat trick on the night.  McBride assisted Mundorf’s third goal of the quarter and then completed his own hat trick off of Poilllon’s third assist on the night.  McBride finished the night with three goals and one assist.  When Ross scored his third goal of the night for Rochester off of an assist from M Dan Hardy with three seconds left in the quarter the Outlaws led 15-9.

The Denver Outlaws scored six goals off of only six shots on goal in an extremely effective display of shooting in the third quarter.

The Rochester Rattlers special teams continued to play well as Ross’s goal with three seconds left in the third quarter was a two point power play goal for their man up unit.

Rochester Rattlers superstar A Ned Crotty left the game with a knee injury in the middle of the third quarter.  Crotty did not record a point in the game.  It was the first time in his career that Crotty played a game for Rochester and did not score a goal or an assist.

Poillon completed his four point night (one goal and three assists) with a goal 57 seconds into the fourth quarter.  Mundorf had the assist for his eighth and final point of the evening.  Leveille scored his second goal of the night for Rochester, and he had an assist on promising rookie M Roy Lang’s goal.  Lang has four goals on the season.  Rochester’s man down unit killed off their final 30 second penalty of the evening in the fourth quarter and shut out the Outlaws man up unit on the evening with 3:43 left in the game.  Rattlers A Steven Boyle scored the game’s final goal off of an assist from Montelli with eight seconds remaining to finish out the scoring at 16-12.

The Rochester Rattlers ended the night with a 2-4 record.  They are two games behind the Long Island Lizards for the fourth and final spot in the MLL playoff picture.
