Rattlers select Duke's Jordan Wolf as No. 2 Overall in MLL Draft

ROCHESTER, NY (January 10, 2014) – The Rochester Rattlers selected seven athletes in the 2014 MLL Collegiate Draft at the US Lacrosse Convention in Philadelphia,  Pa.

For the first selection at No 2 overall the Rattlers selected 2013 NCAA Champion and Duke standout Jordan Wolf. Rochester knew they had some offensive holes to fill with the recent departure of Ned Crotty, who was one of the league’s 25 top scorers, and Matt Striebel, who led the league in two-point goals last season. In selecting Wolf, the Rattlers hope to add a rabid scorer to their attack, as he led the Blue Devils in goals (57), assists (28), and points (85) last season. These numbers had him ranked third in the ACC and thirteenth nationally for points per game, and second in the ACC and twelfth nationally for goals per game. With a season average of 2.58 goals per game, the Rattlers would see a strong offensive jump should he sign with the team.

When asked about his impressions of the draft, head coach Tim Soudan responded positively, stating that the Rattlers “addressed a lot of our needs, being able to come away with one of the top two offensive guys in the nation right now, Jordan Wolf, is going to help us tremendously.”

He was also happy to select Miles Thompson for the Rattlers’ second pick (20th overall), contending that he and his cousin, Ty Thompson (also selected by the Rattlers) “know how to play the game the right way.” If Thompson joins the Rochester team, he too can help offensively. In his three years at Albany, the attackman has 107 goals and 67 assists for a combined total of 174 points, not to mention having swiped 76 ground balls. He scored a goal in all 12 games played last year, and tallied five or more points in 10 of those games. Should Thompson join the Rattlers, he may help them get on the board first, which was key to their success last year as they were 5-2 when scoring the first goal.

The Rattlers third pick (26th overall) was LSM, two-time captain John LoCascio of Villanova. In his three seasons thus far at Villanova, he has collected 164 ground balls and caused 87 turnovers. In addition to acquiring middie LoCascio, the Rattlers also selected Dan Eipp for their fifth pick (32nd overall), who hails from Harvard with career highs of four goals per game, three assists per game, and three ground balls per game, all totals achieved more than three times. The third and final midfielder they selected (ninth pick, 60th overall) was Tom LaCrosse of Penn State. LaCrosse was ranked forth on his team last year in shots (62), goals (23) and points (28), topping the top stats for PSU midfielders. Should LoCascio, Eipp, and LaCrosse sign with the Rattlers, they would provide the team with a layered, productive two-way midfield.

Selected fourth and eighth by the Rattlers (28th and 56th overall) were attackmen Ty Thompson of Albany (cousin of earlier selectee Miles Thompson) and Mark Cockerton of the University of Virginia. If they choose to join the Rattlers, they will bring with them a particularly active offense; Thompson with an average of three goals a game, and Cockerton netting at least one goal in all 14 games he appeared in last season.

Adding to their defensive depth, the Rattlers selected Tom Freshour of Cornell for their sixth pick (44th overall) and Andrew Wagner—the first Division II athlete drafted of the night—from Mercyhurst, for their seventh pick (52nd overall). Freshour averages one caused turnover a game (19 CTOs in 18 games), while Wagner won the William C. Schmeisser Award as Division II’s Most Outstanding Defender.
