Groot Returns To Rattlers Midfield

March 18, 2016
The Rochester Rattlers acquired M Dan Groot and three selections in the 2013 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Entry Draft from the Ohio Machine for M Roy Lang and the Rattlers Second Round selection (11 th overall) in the 2013 Draft.

Groot is a local product from Canandaigua Academy and he returns to the Rattlers after spending the 2011 season with the club.  He played in 12 games for Rochester and scooped 36 ground balls.  He also added one goal and two assists.  Groot had a breakout season offensively with eight goals and three assists for 11 points for the Machine in 2012.  He also collected 26 ground balls in 13 games. Groot was a defensive presence in the Rattlers midfield two years ago, and is expected to return to Rochester to fulfill that role this season.

The Rochester Rattlers also acquired three selections in the 2013 MLL Draft from the Ohio Machine – the 17 th overall pick, the 20 th overall pick, and the 38 th overall pick.

The move is the third of the 2012-13 offseason for the Rochester Rattlers.  On September 11 th Rochester acquired A Billy Bitter and D Kevin Randall from the Charlotte Hounds.  They also acquired FO John Ortolani from the Boston Cannons on September 9 th

“We’re looking forward to bringing Dan (Groot) back to Rochester.”  Rattlers head coach Tim Soudan said.  “He’s a local kid who was an asset for us when I took over the team in 2011.  We know we’ve got a talented core group of young players here in Rochester who will be here for years to come.  We’ve made a couple of moves over the past few weeks to sure up some areas on our roster, and we hope we’ve added some more options in the attack, defense, and at the ‘X’ already this offseason.”

Groot will be expected to replace M Kevin Drew as a short stick defensive midfielder.  Drew was traded to Charlotte in the deal for Bitter and Randall.  Groot will join 2012 MLL All-Star Steve DeNapoli at the position for the 2013 Rochester Rattlers.

In 2012 the Rochester Rattlers improved from a 2-10 mark in 2011 to finish 7-7.  The young Rattlers were playing for a playoff spot on the final weekend of the season, but ultimately missed out on the fourth and final spot in the 2012 MLL playoffs by one game.   Rochester is hoping that the additions of Bitter, Groot, Randall, and Ortolani to their talented young roster will push them over the hump in 2013.
