Rattlers and Nationals Histories Are Intertwined

March 18, 2016
The Rochester Rattlers return home for the first time since June 1 st as they host the Hamilton Nationals in Sahlen’s Stadium on Saturday, June 23 rd at 7 PM. Both teams enter the game 2-4, and are two games behind the Long Island Lizards for the fourth and final playoff spot in Major League Lacrosse. The game will break the tie for fifth place between the two teams before going into the 2012 All-Star break.

This upcoming game Saturday is pretty unique as the Nationals used to be the Rattlers. When the Rattlers team folded after the 2008 season they moved to Toronto with seven current players having been part of the Rattlers championship team. The Rattlers have played them three times since they have returned and have lost all three.

The Nationals moved their team from Toronto to Hamilton, Ontario for the 2011 season where head coach Regy Thorpe returned to the MLL for the first time since the 2008 season when he helped the Rochester Rattlers win the 2008 Steinfield Cup.  Thorpe spent three seasons as an assistant coach with the Rattlers, which included a stint as a player/assistant coach during the 2006 season.  He also played for Rochester for six seasons (2001-06).  The job with the Nationals is his first professional head coaching job.

Another unique aspect to the game is that the Rattlers will be honoring a few members of the opposing team Saturday night in Rochester. Three Hamilton Nationals players will be recognized for winning the 2012 National Lacrosse League Championship with the Rochester Knighthawks. Cody Jamieson, Stephen Keogh and Joe Walters along with current Rattlers star Joel White will take part in a pregame ceremony prior to the game against the Rochester Rattlers at Sahlen’s Stadium.

Playing the Nationals has been a different experience than playing other teams this season because of their former ties to Rochester, but the Ratttlers hope to come out with a win this time.

CBS Sports Network will be nationally televising the game, and live stats will be available at Tickets are still available for Saturday, June 23 rd’s game with the Hamilton Nationals.
