The number one ranked Syracuse University Orange defeated a pesky Siena team 10-4 in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Syracuse Orange goalie John Galloway (Rattlers round 4 pick – 20 th overall) made 8 saves and only allowed 4 goals while defender Joel White (Rattlers round 1 pick – 2 nd overall) scooped 5 ground balls and caused 3 turnovers. Midfielder Jovan Miller (Rattlers round 2 pick – 8 th overall) started and contributed to a team effort that yielded 51 shots and won the fifty-fifty battle 34-15.
Maryland senior attacker and Rochester native Grant Catalino (draft rights acquired via trade with Denver) had one goal and one assist for two points as the seventh ranked Terrapins defeated the eighth ranked University of North Carolina Tar heels 13-6. Catalino and team mate Brian Farrell combined to score one of Maryland’s 13 goals using
the hidden ball trick.
Maryland and Syracuse meet in the NCAA quarterfinals Sunday May 22nd on ESPNU at noon.
The sixth ranked Duke University Blue Devils, the defending NCAA champions, defeated the fourteenth ranked University of Delaware 15-14. Duke middie Tom Montelli (Rattlers round 4 pick – 26
th overall) chipped in a goal and an assist in the victory. Duke’s next opponent is Notre Dame on Sunday May 22
nd at 2:30PM on ESPNU.
Attacker Brian Caulfield (Rattlers round 6 pick – 32
nd overall) of the University of Albany, attacker Jordan McBride (Rattlers round 3 pick – 14
th overall) from Stony Brook, midfielder Adam Jones (Rattlers round 7 pick – 38
th overall) of Canisius, and midfielder Matt Chadderdon(Rattlers round 8 pick – 44
th overall) of LeMoyne have all completed their senior seasons.
Veteran attacker Casey Powell is currently representing his country with Team USA in the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships. Team USA will play the host nation Czech Republic on Saturday May 21st, Ireland on Sunday May 22
nd, and Iroquois on Monday May 23 in Prauge.
