The Rochester Rattlers will be opening their training camp on Saturday, April 14 th from noon to 3PM in Sahlen’s Stadium. The Rattlers second session of camp will be on Sunday, April 15 th from 11AM to 1PM at Total Sports Experience. Rattlers coach Tim Soudan and general manager Rob Clark will have 27 players in Rochester for the first weekend of training camp. The Rattlers will have some core players from their 2012 roster mixed in with players selected in the Supplemental Draft as well as players claimed outright from the MLL Player Pool during the off-season.
“We’ve kind of got guys all over the place right now.” Soudan said. “We’ve got a good number of guys on our roster who are still involved with indoor, and of course our college draftees won’t be available until May. What we are trying to do this weekend is bring in as many guys as we can to evaluate the talent that we have on our roster right now.”
Rattlers G John Galloway and M Matt Striebel will be among the returning players in training camp this weekend. Last season John Galloway started the last ten games of the season after fulfilling his commitment to Syracuse University in the spring. He was named the Rattlers Rookie of the Year after compiling a 2-7 record with a 13.11 goals against average and a .537 save percentage. Galloway was named the Cascade Rookie of the Week after the Rattlers defeated the Denver Outlaws 9-8 in Week 8.
Veteran M Matt Striebel will also be in camp this weekend. Striebel has had a storied career in U.S. Lacrosse. He is a three-time winner of the Steinfeld Cup with Philadelphia in 2004, 2006, and 2007. He is a seven time MLL All-Star, and a three-time member of Team USA in the World Lacrosse Championships. Striebel has won two gold medals with Team USA (2002, 2010). Last season Striebel scored 13 goals (four 2-pt goals) and added eight assists for 25 points with the Rattlers. D Tom Guadagnolo, Jr., D Diogo Godoi and M Marty Cahill are also returning from last year’s team and will be in camp this weekend.
“This is the first weekend of the 2012 season.” Rattlers Assistant General Manager Nate Snyder said. “We want to evaluate some of the talent that we’re bringing into camp this weekend, but we also want to start building the team for this season. John (Galloway) and Striebel are going to be important elements of this year’s team, and it is important that we have them here in camp.”
The Rochester Rattlers will be getting a look at offseason acquisition D John Lade and A Kevin Leveille for the first time this weekend. Clark and Sudan acquired Lade from the Boston Cannons for a third round pick in the 2012 MLL Draft. He played three games as a rookie for the Cannons last season. Lade was a three time All-American and the 2011 National Defenseman of the Year with the Syracuse University Orange.
A Kevin Leveille is returning to Major League Lacrosse after a one year hiatus in 2011. The Rattlers retained Leveille’s rights when they acquired the Chicago Machine’s franchise rights and held onto them last season even though he chose not to play. The reason – Leveille scored 224 goals in his first seven years in the league.
“Last season we went through the process of rebuilding the roster that we inherited from the Chicago Machine.” Soudan said. “At the end of last season we felt like we had made a lot of progress in putting together a talented young nucleus for the future, but we had certain needs that we wanted to fill during the offseason. John (Lade) and Leveille certainly are two guys who can come in and fill needs for us.”
The Rochester Rattlers will be making a special appearance at the Rochester Knighthawks game this Saturday night at the Blue Cross Arena. Rochester Rattlers star D Joel White is also a standout player with the indoor Knighthawks. The Rattlers are going to support White and the Knighthawks. Check in with the Rattlers table at the Knighthawks game to meet Rochester Rattlers players and get autographs.
