The Nationals defeated the Rochester Rattlers 15-14 in overtime on Saturday night at Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton, Ontario. Former Rattler Brett Bucktooth combined with former Rattler Brodie Merrill, both members of Rochester’s 2008 MLL Championship team, to score the game winning goal for Hamilton 7:41 into overtime. The Nationals got out to a 14-6 lead with 5:11 seconds left in the third quarter only to see the Rattlers score seven consecutive goals, including a Matt Striebel two-pointer with 3:29 left in regulation, to tie the game and force overtime. Attack Jeff Colburn had three goals, rookie Brian McBride added two more, and Rattlers leading scorer Ned Crotty added four assists to fuel the eight point rally.
The Hamilton Nationals opened the scoring in Saturday night’s contest with a goal from David Earl as he fell to the ground 3:11 seconds into the contest off an assist from Joe Walters. Walters was involved again less than a minute later giving an assist to Jordan Hall for a 2-0 Hamilton lead. Rochester Rattlers midfielders Matthew Cassalia and Martin Cahill scored three of the game’s next four goals. When Rattlers rookie Jordan McBride scored with a stick fake it gave the Rattlers a 4-3 lead. With 2:39 left In the first quarter Grant Catalino and Matt Striebel got flagged for penalties giving Hamilton a two-man advantage. Forty-five seconds later Cody Jamieson tied the game at four off of Joe Walters third assist to finish up a great sequence of power play passing.
Former Rattler Brett Bucktooth opened the scoring 0:49 into the second quarter and Cody Jamieson ripped a shot and scored his second goal of the game thirty second later to cap a three goal run for Hamilton. The Nationals led the Rattlers 6-4. Rochester scored two of the next three goals to cut the lead to one. Ned Crotty scored off of a run in from the left wing and a shot that skipped past Rodgers. Martin Cahill scored the second for the Rattlers and Jeff Colburn added an assist to make the score 7-6 Nationals with 8:15 seconds left in the half. Kevin Crowley finished Joe Walter’s fourth assist of the match and David Earl scored his third goal of the game to give the Nationals a 9-6 lead at the half.
Hamilton opened the second half with a five goal run led by former Rattler Joe Walters. Walters recorded his fifth assist of the game on Jeremy Boltus second goal of the game 1:41 into the half. Walters scored his first goal of the game just over two minutes later to give Hamilton an 11-6 lead. Cody Jamieson scored his third goal of the game 4:39 into the third quarter, David Earl scored his fourth goal of the game off of Joe Walters sixth assist, and Joe Walter scored his second goal of the game with 5:11 seconds left in the third quarter. Hamilton had its’ largest lead of the game 14-6. Walter’s goal was also the last goal that the Nationals would score in regulation. Joe Walter’s six assists set a Hamilton franchise record for assists in a game.
The Rattlers began their six goal comeback with 3:01 second left in the third quarter as Jeff Colburn scored his first goal of the game off of a Ned Crotty assist. The Nationals Kevin Crowley was called for slashing at 13:36 in the third quarter giving Jordan Levine the chance to score a power play goal off of Ned Crotty’s second assist of the quarter with 0:42 seconds remaining. The third quarter ended 14-8 Nationals.
The fourth quarter opened with two unassisted goals, one from Jeff Colburn and the other from Jordan McBride, in the first 5:04 to make it 14-10 Nationals. Ninety seconds later Jordan McBride scored his third goal of the game off an assist from Ned Crotty. Nationals goalie Scott Rodgers picked up an illegal cross checking penalty at the 11:11 mark in the fourth quarter. Twenty seconds later Matt Striebel scored his third two-point goal of the year off an assist from Jordan Levine to cut the Nationals lead to 14-13. Jeff Colburn scored the game tying goal, his third of the rally, off an assist from Ned Crotty with 0:57 left in regulation.
Rochester Rattlers Ned Crotty (1G – 4A) and Jeff Colburn (3G – 2A) each finished with five point.
The Rattlers return to action on Saturday July 2
nd at 7PM in Chesapeake. They return home on Saturday July 23
rd against the Denver Outlaws.
