Rochester Eliminated From Playoffs With Loss to Chesapeake

March 18, 2016

The Rochester Rattlers fell to the Chesapeake Bayhawks 12-8 on Saturday, August 3 rd and were eliminated from playoff contention.

Rochester was outscored 4-1 in the second quarter, and was held to under ten goals for the sixth time this year as they suffered their eighth defeat this season. Attackman Ned Crotty tallied four points, and Duke rookie Dave Lawson scored twice as the Rattlers were unable to stay in the playoff race.

Chesapeake started off the first quarter of Saturday hot, starting the game with a three-goal run. The first goal didn’t come until 3:08 in when Bayhawks leading scorer Drew Westervelt struck first to give Chesapeake a 1-0 lead. In the next 1:42, Chesapeake scored two more goals, with scores from Matt Mackrides and Michael Kimmel. Rochester had their scoring opportunities in the first frame, including a man up opportunity after a Matt Abbott offsides penalty, but failed to convert on the man advantage. The Rattlers finally ended the Bayhawks’ streak when Lawson extended his scoring streak to seven games with his 14 th tally of the season after he used a slick face dodge and slipped one past Kip Turner to make the score 3-1. Lawson also drew a penalty on that play, and Rochester capitalized on that man advantage with a Kevin Leveille quick stick off a John Ranagan feed to cut Chesapeake’s lead to 3-2. That strike would stand as the last score of the opening quarter, with Rochester heading into the second trailing the Bayhawks, 3-2.

The second quarter was all Chesapeake, as the Bayhawks outscored the Rattlers 4-1 in the second frame. Chesapeake again started the second quarter on a roll, opening with another three-goal run. The Bayhawks struck first in the second, when a Rochester turnover led to an Abbot fast break goal to give the Bayhawks a 4-2 lead. 51 seconds later, Mackrides tallied his second of the night to put Chesapeake up 5-2. After another Rochester turnover, Jeff Reynolds pushed it in transition to increase Chesapeake’s lead to 6-2. Rochester really struggled finding the net in the second quarter, with many turnovers and sloppy play. The Rattlers finally scored their lone goal of the quarter when 2013 MLL All-Star Mike Manley intercepted a pass and took it end to end to score his third of the season and to make the score 6-3 with 1:41 remaining. The Bayhawks were able to find the back of the net once more before half time, when Ben Rubeor scored with 52 seconds left to bring Chesapeake into the second half leading Rochester 7-3.

The third quarter was very back and forth, with the Rattlers and Bayhawks trading scores. Rochester struck first in the second half, when Lawson drove to the net down the right ally and scored his second of the night to cut Chesapeake’s lead to 7-4. Following that goal, an attempted pass from Crotty got deflected and found its way through Chesapeake’s defense, and slipped by Turner for a two-point strike to bring the Rattlers within one with a score of 7-6. Abbot and Grant scored the next two goals for the Bayhawks to extend their lead to 9-6, but Rochester’s Steven Boyle finished a Crotty feed off a dodge from behind to tally his eighth of the year and to make the score 9-7. Chesapeake would score the final goal of the third quarter, when Westervelt tallied his second of the night, bringing Chesapeake into the final quarter leading 10-7.

The fourth and final quarter saw little action, with only three total goals being scored. After an early tripping penalty from Rattlers’ Joel White, Westervelt scored his hat trick goal 1:54 into the fourth to put Chesapeake ahead of Rochester 11-7. The next 7:59 went scoreless for both teams, with Rochester suffering from more turnovers. The Rattlers were able to find their first score of the fourth when Crotty drove from behind and fired one past Turner for his second of the night 9:53 in to make it 11-8, but would not score again, as Chesapeake’s Kyle Dixon would add some insurance late and would help the Bayhawks defeat the Rattlers with a final score of 12-8.

Rattlers faceoff man John Ortolani won the faceoff battle, going 13-23 at the X, and goalie John Galloway made six saves in the loss. White also led the Rochester with nine ground balls. The loss leaves the Rattlers with a 5-8 record, and eliminates them from the 2013 MLL playoffs, with Charlotte, Denver, Hamilton, and Chesapeake all claiming playoff spots.

Rochester is in action for the last time this season next Saturday, August 10 th at 7 PM. Don’t miss your final chance to see the Rattlers play, as you can watch that game on ESPN3.
