Rochester Rattlers goalie Mike Gabel has been named the Major League Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week for Week Three. Gabel started his first game of the season for the Rattlers on Saturday, May 12 th in a 12 – 8 victory over the Chesapeake Bayhawks in Navy – Marine Corps Stadium.
“Gabel was on point on Saturday night.” Rattlers head coach Tim Soudan said. “He was seeing the ball extremely well. He anchored our defense and was really just lights out.”
Gabel anchored a Rochester defense that limited Chesapeake to a season-low six goals. He made a season-high 27 saves, including 17 in the second half, as the Rattlers earned their first win of the season.
The 27 saves by Gabel are the most by an MLL goalkeeper this season and the most since former Philadelphia Barrage goalkeeper
Brian Dougherty had 28 saves on July 3, 2008.
Gabel has posted a 6.40 goals against average while stopping 78.4 per cent of the shots he has faced.
Gabel was an original member of the Chicago Machine, and last year he started the first two games of the Rochester Rattlers season.
Gabel has 12 wins and a 15.09 goals against average in his Major League Lacrosse career. He has made 816 career saves and has a 0.535 career save percentage.
